Faulty Olympic Economics?
by Dave
Thursday, October 27, 2005
SportsBusiness.com reports that if softball and baseball are restored to the games, it will cost an additional £50 million to build the temporary venues needed to host the games. However, this cost was presumably included in London's original bid since that was made prior to the July vote which dropped the sports.
Perhaps more importantly, this analysis fails to account for the revenues the sports would generate. I have no idea how many seats were available for baseball and softball in past games but I'm willing to go out on a limb and guess there were between 3,000 and 5,000. I do know that softball was pretty much sold out in each of the years it was an Olympic sport. I'm not sure about baseball. The quotes I saw for prices for these seats began at $100 per in Athens. There were 32 total softball games played. So by doing a little math, I come up with a preliminary figure of $10 - $16 million just for attendance, just for softball.
My guess is that the typical Olympic fan spends at least as much on food, drink and souvenirs as he or she does on the ticket. That brings the "total take" for softball to around $20 - $30 million. This is likely true at the venue alone but also fails to account for Olympic softball souvenirs sold outside of it, not to mention the expenditures made by people who, like me, might be attending the games just to watch softball. I think it is fair to guess that the revenues of baseball and softball cover a very high percentage of the cost of building the venue.
Olympic games are not in general positive earners. The cities which host them do so in order to promote their places as potential tourist spots. There is a high degree of prestige which comes with hosting the games. I know that I will absolutely not attend the Olympics in London if there is no softball. I also know that I was giving serious consideration to going there before I heard the bad news that my two favorite sports were being kicked aside. I have never been to the games but it is one of my "life goals." But I will quickly push this goal aside if softball is not included.
It is clear to me that the potential vote for reinstatement does not hinge upon the economics of the revenues of a sport over the cost of building its venue. But to the extent any delegate does consider this, I would hope they are bright enough to consider the whole picture.

Important Association Backs Reinstatement Of Softball And Baseball
by Dave
Sunday, October 23, 2005
The Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (web site frequently unreachable) is backing the return of softball and baseball to the Olympic games according to numerous reports circulating in the media. Speaking on Friday at the council's meeting in Lausanne, ASOIF director Bob Fasula said, We are fully supportive of these two federations."
Both sports were removed from the 2012 Games in London after a vote in July in Singapore. Each sport needed to garner 53 votes out of 105 delegates to remain part of the games. The softball vote was 52-52 while baseball was 54-50. Jim Easton, of the U.S. abstained from voting due to his financial connection to the sports. Easton Sports has a huge interest in promoting baseball and softball.
If softball is to be returned to the 2012 games, the vote from this past summer will have to be overturned at the International Olympic Committee's meeting in Turin before the winter games in February. At this point it the procedure for reinstatement is one-third of the 115 IOC members would need to submit motions to consider a new vote at the meeting. Then a majority of the members would have to vote in favor of reinstatement. If these two events occur, softball would be back in.
It looks like we have shot at getting our sport back into the games but it is going to take a good deal of effort on the part of USOC president Peter Ueberroth and those he has gathered to support reinstatement.
