Game Time

Well, that day we've been waiting for over the past several months is finally here. The Winter Olympics start Saturday, the 11th, with the opening ceremonies. That means the IOC will be meeting over the next three days beginning tomorrow. To recap what must happen, first one-third of the 115 IOC members must move to consider a new vote. Then a majority (58) will have to vote in favor of including softball in the 2012 Olympics in London. I think it is fair to expect Jim Easton, chairman of Easton Sports, to again abstain from the vote since he truly has a financial interest in promoting the sport. With the continued growth in popularity of Women's softball throughout the entire world, hopefully we can get this thing passed and go back to the happy times. Women's sports need softball as much as softball needs to be in the Olympics. Our sport needs to have the television exposure to young girls. There is no way to replace this exposure. And young girls also need to see softball. There is no way to replace the role models they will adopt while watching this game with their families. Let's all cross our fingers, toes, whatever and pray for the reinstatement of our game to the Olympics.
Update, Feb 8
Cuba made it official by requesting the IOC for a debate on the decision, made seven months ago, to exclude baseball and softball from the 2012 London Olympic Games. IOC President, Jacques Rogge, said that the baseball/softball question will be heard tomorrow when the Olympic program is put on the table for discussion.
Breaking News, Feb 9
Softball is out for 2012. The IOC failed to vote for putting it to a secret vote on Thursday. We still have the 2008 games but softball will not be a part of the 2012 games in England.
