Non-Wood Bat Follow-Up
by Dave
Thursday, October 26, 2006
The following was again forwarded by a Little League Mom after the New Jersey Assembly considered a ban on Non-Wood bats:
"October 25, 2006 Dear New Jersey Little League Volunteers and Supporters, As you may know, proposed legislation in the State of New Jersey would prohibit the use of non-wood bats for all levels of baseball AND softball involving players 18 years of age and younger. Hearings on this subject were held on Thursday, October 19, 2006 at the state capital in Trenton . The committee voted 4-2 to send the measure to the State Assembly as the next step in the legislative process. I attended the hearing, along with several Little League volunteers. Before the hearing, however, Little League International conducted a web-based survey of its volunteers in New Jersey , presenting the facts involved. Little League statistics show that the number of injuries to pitchers who were hit by batted balls has decreased since bat manufacturers agreed to limit the “Bat Performance Factor” of bats bearing the Little League trademark. As a result, there is no statistical reason to believe that non-wood bats used in Little League games are unsafe. I thought you might like to know the results of the survey, which I reported to the committee last week before it voted. Question: Based on the facts noted above, do you believe there should be a ban on non-wood bats in New Jersey as the legislation proposes?
Total Respondents: 3,030 1,978 responded "NO" (65 percent) 1,052 responded "YES" (35 percent) Thank you to everyone who took part in the survey. As always, it is valuable to us at Little League International to know the opinions of our volunteers. We appreciate your help in allowing the members of the committee to know the views of a large majority of Little League volunteers. Now, I would invite you to contact your legislator to make your voice be heard in this important issue. You can find your legislator’s contact information at the following web address:
