Wow! What A Field

The ASA announced its initial watch list for the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award.   The list is 50 players from 28 Division I schools.   USA Softball will announce its 25 finalists on April 5 which may include players not on this list.   Ten from this list will be announced as finalists on May 10 and that will be pared won to 3 May 31 with the ultimate winner being named during the WCWS.

This year’s watch list contains six players who were among the Top 10 finalists for the 2005 Award including Michigan’s Jennie Ritter, Arizona’s Caitlin Lowe and Osterman who were the final three finalists in Oklahoma City.

The list of 50 is as follows (in alphabetical order with class:

Wow!   What a list.   Who do you like?   Jennie Ritter has to be one of my favorites but, then again, so does her teammate Samantha Findlay.   But how can you count out catcher extraordinaire Emily Zaplatosch?   Need I say Cat Osterman?   But Monica Abbott is a great pitcher too!   And so are Alicia Hollowell and Jeli Selden.   My dream infield would have to include Caitlin Benyi.   The same can be said for her teammates Jodie Legaspi and Andrea Duran.   This is taking nothing from the rest of the list.

I just don't know how the heck anybody is supposed to pick one player from this field and say, "She's the best."

USA Softball Announces 2006 National Team Schedule

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – USA Softball announced today its schedule for the 2006 season.   The USA will compete in several major events this season including the ISF Women’s World Championship in Beijing, China and World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City.

USA Softball will hold its 2006 World Championship Team Selection Camp, June 12-16, where over 35 athletes will be invited to compete for a spot on the 2006 roster.

Seventeen players will be selected from the camp and will then compete in all USA Softball Women’s National Team events including games against the Texas Thunder and the Arizona Heat from the National Pro Fastpitch League during the first and last weekends of July.

Team USA will look to make a statement by taking the title at the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City, Okla., July 11-18.   The USA is expected to be facing powerhouses from all over the world including Australia, China, Japan, Canada and Great Britain.

Following the World Cup, Team USA will have a month to complete preparations for its run at a sixth consecutive World Championship and the No. 1 seed at the 2008 Summer Olympics.   The ISF Women’s World Championship in Beijing, China will be held, August 27-September 5 and should be the most highly contested World Championship in more than a decade.

The USA Women’s National Team wraps up its season on the road at the Japan Cup in Yokohama, Japan November 13-19 where it will look to regain its title from 2004.

USA Softball will also field a team to compete at the World University Games in Taiwan, July 12-24.   This team will feature athletes who have just finished college or have college eligibility remaining.   The U.S. won the first World University Games held in Plant City, Fla., in 2005.
